Ford Recalls 1.4 Million Vehicles Over Steering Wheel Problems

Ford is recalling about 1.4 million midsize vehicles in North America after discovering that steering wheel bolts can loosen and fall out over time, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Ford said it is aware of two crashes and one injury related to the issue.
The safety recall affects certain Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles built between 2014 and 2018. The recalled vehicles include:
• 2014–2017 Fusions manufactured between August 6, 2013, and February 29, 2016, at Ford’s Flat Rock, Michigan, plant.
• Fusion vehicles produced between 2014 and March 5, 2018, at Ford’s Hermosillo, Mexico, plant.
• The Lincoln MKZ was produced from 2014 to March 5, 2018, at Ford’s Hermosillo, Mexico, plant.
Ford will notify affected owners via email or mail if their vehicle is affected by the recall. Owners can then take their vehicles to a Ford dealership to have the long bolts replaced with thicker ones and to have nylon pads installed to prevent the steering wheel from coming loose.
“While manufacturers use their own records and current state vehicle registration information, if you are concerned that your vehicle may be subject to a recall and you have not received a notice, you can enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website,” explained Selina Tedesco, a product analyst at the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Media and Technology Lab.
Please note that since this is a new recall, the NHTSA database will continue to be updated as more VINs are identified, so your model may not appear on the list right away. If you have any questions, you can contact your local Ford dealer for further instructions.
